Infinity
Eastern Oregon and the High Desert
“For man to be able to live he must either not see the infinite, or have such an explanation of the meaning of life as will connect the finite with the infinite.”
-Leo Tolstoy
Nocturne
Deschutes River in Bend, OR
“One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness Conscious.”
-Carl Jung
The Deschutes River flows through my new town and the greater surrounding landscape. There is a dark, cold, stillness to the river at night. There is something primitive, fearful, and exhilirating about being on the edge of a powerful river and a dense forest in darkness. I could barely see.
Between the Pines
Belknap Lava fields, McKenzie Pass, OR
I find that photographing trees is as much portraiture as it is landscape photography, especially when finding a species with as much personality as these stout lodgepole pines staking their claim in the barren Belknap Lava Fields of Oregon.
The pines show a unique and humble resourcefulness, clinging to sharp volcanic rocks and often finding less than three inches of soil for their sustenance.
Between the Pines is about individuality in the chorus of nature, and a study of the beauty of life in harsh conditions.
